The Red Lodge

Short Stay - Kashmir

About THE Red LODGE

Set by the banks of a raging river, this beautiful homestay is run by an Indo-French couple. The construction of the home is very much embedded in Kashmiri architecture, but the essence is also influenced by French culture.

The hosts are extremely ecologically smart, and have cows, hens, sheep and dogs on their property that consume their wet waste. They try their best to recycle their dry waste and plastics by actually donating to a mobile garbage collector who comes all the way from Rajasthan! The hosts also have a space to grow their vegetables and fruit, along with a rose garden that they are very proud of.

WHAT TO EAT

Here, one can taste the Kashmiri delicacies, called wazwan and also indulge in some excellent homemade food. There is a “Dish of the Day,” vegetarian or non-vegetarian, prepared by the hosts or the cook, with all the seasonal and regional ingredients.

For breakfast, one is served fresh Kashmiri bread (called tsoth), homemade jams ranging from plum, apricot and strawberry that are to die for, and white honey harvested in the village (also available for sale). One can take their meals or breakfast in the garden with a view of the river, or simply in the kitchen “French or Kashmiri style,” in the dining room near the wood stove.

WHAT TO DO

Do nothing! Enjoy the homestay by sitting on its various balconies enjoying the sound of the gushing river near you. For those who like adventure on their holidays, the hosts can organize trekking, sightseeing, fishing, lunch with the villagers, barbecues, horse riding and the like. The hosts are also committed to supporting and employing local entrepreneurs for these activities. A flat screen television is available for all in the living room of the main house, and internet connection is at one’s disposal, but be ready for slow network. A vast variety of books in various languages are available for one to read, along with games for kids and adults like Monopoly, Scrabble, Mikado, cards, etc.

ABOUT THE PLACE

There are a total of six large rooms with king-size beds in the homestay – two of these are in the main house that one shares with the hosts, and four that overlook the river in a separate building.

Each room has its own bathroom in which Indian and Western habits can be fulfilled (shower, bucket, mug and small bench), one electric heater, slippers, toilet paper roll, guest soaps and towels. Extra blankets, room heater, hot water bottles are available in each room. On request, a fully equipped baby bed is available (also at your disposal are clothes for kids and warm jackets for adults).

The rooms offer a different elegance with a Kashmiri and French touch. A chosen décor combined with comfort and attention to detail can be clearly seen.
