Nubra Organic Oasis

Short Stay - Nubra (Ladakh)

About Nubra Organic Oasis

Nubra Organic Oasis is situated near the confluence of the Shyok and Nubra rivers in Ladakh, a large valley that separates the Ladakh Range from the Karakoram. It is surrounded by a natural vegetation of seabuckthorn, willows and wild flowers, inhabited by desert wildlife including woolly hare, Tibetan fox and lynx.

This is a family-run ecotourism venture. The 11 acre farm has been planted with poplar, willow, apricot and apple trees, along with an organic vegetable garden. It commands a 360 degree view of the Karakoram mountains, the sand dunes and the Nubra river.

Nubra Valley is the area where the Shyok River meets the Nubra River to form a large valley that separates the Ladakh and Karakoram Ranges. This 2050m (10,000 feet) high altitude cold desert has rare precipitation and scant vegetation except along river beds and villages, which are irrigated and fertile, producing wheat, barley, peas, mustard and apples, walnuts, apricots and almond trees. The valley extends up to Turtuk to the north west and Siachen Glacier to the north east where the Saser and Karakoram Pass used to connect Nubra with Xinjiang, situated on the old silk route

For WHOM?

The property is ideal for travellers who’d like to experience a quiet, environmentally-friendly and Ladakhi-run place, rather than the conglomerate of accommodations in Hundar. Couples, families and small groups of friends will all enjoy the place.

WHAT TO EAT

Food served is a mix of Indian, continental and Ladakhi dishes. The latter include momos, thinmok, and thukpa (a broth similar to noodles with large piece of barley dough), vegetarian as well as non-veg. Needless to say, the vegetables used come from the lodge’s organic garden.

WHAT TO DO

The place is excellent both for relaxing with a book (either to read or to write) or for active exploration of the surroundings. Walks can be made directly from the lodge to the banks of the Nubra River, as well as to the quaint semi-traditional village of Sumur. Bicycles can be arranged and, again at walking distance, two-humped Bactrian camels are waiting to take you  on a desert experience in the nearby sand dunes. These are descendants of the Central-Asian animals that once carried merchandise between Leh, the capital of Ladakh, and Yarkhand and Kashgar on the Silk Road.

ABOUT THE PLACE

At Nubra Organic Oasis you either stay in comfortable, spacious safari tents or Ladakhi-style loam huts. Both have very decnt bathrooms with hot and cold running water, and all huts and tents have a front deck that commands sweeping views of the Ladakh Range, the Karakoram and the Nubra Valley.

The main building, also constructed in Ladakhi loam (rammed earth) style, has an indoor and outdoor sitting and dining area.

HOW TO REACH?

The accommodation is located in the Nubra Valley, at about 4-5 hours drive from Ladakh’s capital, Leh. Leh can be reached by direct flight from Delhi. Accurate details will be given at the time of confirmation.
