THE RAINFOREST  LODGE

Short Stay - Western Ghats (Kerala)

About THE RAINFOREST LODGE

Rainforest Refuge is primarily a research station that studies the biodiversity of Agumbe area, located inside the Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary. The station is committed to preserving the rainforests of Agumbe. Guests are advised to remain respectful and caring of the space as well. The team here has maintained and restored forest land and are extremely particular about the fact that tourism doesn’t stop at just a visit. As a result, they organize and conduct a host of activities that enable visitors to learn more and connect more deeply with nature.

The property is tucked deep inside the rainforest, with a perennial stream flowing through. There are large patches of rainforest amongst smaller patches of betelnut plantations. The Rainforest Refuge seamlessly integrates educational activities with fun and exciting adventures. As a result, it attracts ecologists, naturalists and nature lovers from all over the world.

For WHOM?

People who loved Jumanji growing up. We’re half kidding – this property is the dream for those of you who want to spot increasingly rare birds (racket-tailed drongos and malabar hornbills, anyone?), insects, and snakes in one of the most biodiversity-rich hotspots in India. If you want to explore Agumbe, this is the ideal spot to stay at.

WHAT TO EAT

Delicious malnad cuisine is served in a common dining area. The ingredients are sourced from farms nearby or grown in the garden of the station.

Guests are expected to wash their own plates and spoons after the meal.

WHAT TO DO

The station organizes herping tours at night and day. Walk along the stream with a naturalist to observe and learn about the diversity of a rainforest and its symbiotic relationship with the elements. You can also go on sunrise or sunset treks, organized by the property offering you a grand view of the forests and the Sharavathi backwaters.

You are very likely to encounter several reptiles, including a rare snake or two, but please know that you are under the safe guidance of expert naturalists and researchers.

The drive from Tirthahalli to Agumbe itself is a beautiful experience, as it leads through extremely lush and beautiful forests, and villages with traditional Malnad architecture. You can also visit the legendary village of Doddamane, which was used as a set in film producer RK Narayanan’s Malgudi Days. There are ancient forts and temples around the area that are worth checking out as well.

ABOUT THE PLACE

Situate yourself in one of 2 cottage rooms made from recycled wood and spot an abundance of biodiversity right in the heart of the Western Ghats. Or find yourself a cozy nook in the dorm – which accommodates ma maximum of eight people – if you’d like to experience more for less. The cottages come with attached bathrooms, hot water, and a shower, while the dorm has a shared bathroom. Hot water is only available from 4 PM to 10 PM, because the wood that heats up the water comes from the kitchen. All lighting is solar-powered, though there is a generator as a backup.

The property does not allow alcohol, smoking, bonfires, loud music, and lights after 10 PM because you don’t want to scare off the nocturnal wildlife that lives close by.

HOW TO REACH?

You can get here by car, but the last 15 minutes is a narrow dirt track that is beautiful but requires more attention and care while driving. The hosts can also pick you up from the main road for an additional fee. The place is not advised for people with mobility issues.

You are requested to make your bookings for the guided activities in advance. Kindly get in touch for the same.
